It is not unreasonable to say that architects were among the first to work consciously inside and outside the Modern Constitution (Cat. Nr. 48), sometimes consolidating, sometimes criticising it, as part of a dialectic process leading to new forms and meanings. In his "Invisible Cities" of 1972 (Cat. Nr. 19), Italo Calvino writes: "The catalogue of forms is endless: as long as each form will not have found its own city, new cities will pop up. Where the forms exhaust their variations, the city will start to decline."
