Nr. 93 - CARLO VERDELLI 2020, MAT

100 x 100 cm: paper, ink

Carlo Verdelli was chief-editor of the Italian left-wing journal La Repubblica (2019-2020). He had introduced a style of putting provocative titles on the front page, which then were explained in the following pages. In January 2020, one of these titles referred to the need of cancelling a governmental decree that kept illegal migrants out of the country. That title had caused a fierce reaction of the right-wing groups, culminating in anonymous death threats to Verdelli, announcing his "cancellation" on April 23th. Verdelli was put under protection. The case was discussed at the European Council.

On April 23th, John Elkann, CEO of the EXOR holding, controlled by the Agnelli family, communicated that they had bought La Repubblica and that Carlo Verdelli had been removed as chief-editor.
